Naturalization Approval for Colombian National through VAWA Provisions
We recently received an approval for naturalization (citizenship) for a Colombian national who obtained his green card through the VAWA provisions. Congratulations to our client!
VAWA stands for Violence Against Women Act, and it is for individuals who have experienced battery or extreme cruelty while married to a US citizen or Legal Permanent Resident. It is not limited to Women, and our client is a male who qualified for VAWA when we first began working together in 2018. His green card through VAWA was approved in 2022, and the VAWA provisions allow for citizenship after 3 years of lawful permanent residence rather than 5 years if your VAWA was based on marriage to a US citizen. We applied as soon as we were able to, and today our client had his interview which went very smoothly & was approved.
I recall meeting with this client for the first time and the tremendous difficulties he was experiencing then. There is not always a solution under the immigration laws, but sometimes there is. If you are in a marriage to a US citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident which has become abusive, there are options to leave and still obtain your permanent residence.
